Max-4 poplar plants: pack of 100 cuttings, 22 cm
A second coppice clone to pair with H275. Max-4 is a female hybrid of black poplar (Populus nigra) and Japanese poplar (P. maximowiczii). It is one of the most widely planted clones for short rotation coppice in Germany and Central Europe.
What the pack contains
- 100 cuttings of one-year-old wood, 22 cm long, at least 9 mm in diameter at the thin end, with at least 2 buds.
- Clone admitted in the “tested” category of the German register of forest reproductive material, for short rotation coppice.
- EU plant passport and supplier’s document with every delivery.
Why plant two clones
No poplar clone is safe from rust. We recommend planting at least two clones, for example Max-4 and H275, in blocks or alternate rows: an attack on one does not compromise the whole plot.
Planting
- Density: between 3,000 and 4,000 cuttings per hectare for short rotation coppice; at least 10,000 for very short rotation coppice.
- Planting: push the cutting in vertically, buds pointing up, leaving only 1 to 2 cm above ground, in worked, warm soil (April-May).
- Weeding: essential in the first year, preferably mechanical.
CAP rules (France)
Poplar is one of the species accepted for short rotation coppice: at least 1,000 stems per hectare and a harvest at least every 20 years; for very short rotation, at least 10,000 stems per hectare and a harvest at least every 4 years. Max-4 is not a plantation clone: it is not on the list of clones subsidised for high forest poplar stands.
Other formats: H275 poplar cuttings and 60 cm Max-4 rods.
