Miscanthus mulch: Benefits and production guide

Miscanthus mulch is the star of gardens: pH-neutral, stable and aesthetically pleasing, it brightens up flowerbeds. Discover its uses and how to produce your own.

Forget pine bark that acidifies your soil, or straw that blows away at the first gust of wind. In recent years, a new champion has established itself in private and professional gardens alike: Miscanthus mulch.

Why has this shredded grass become the benchmark? How should it be used in the vegetable garden or the ornamental garden? And above all, did you know that you can produce your own mulch for life simply by planting a hedge? Agribiomix explains.

Why is Miscanthus better than other mulches?

Shredded miscanthus has unique physical and chemical properties that overcome most of the shortcomings of traditional mulches.

⚖️ Neutral pH

Unlike pine bark, it does not acidify the soil. Use it anywhere (rose beds, vegetable garden) without any risk of upsetting the soil balance.

🌬️ Maximum Stability

Thanks to its angular shape, the chips interlock. It does not blow away in the wind and stays firmly in place on sloping banks.

💧 Absorbency

A true natural sponge. It keeps the soil cool in summer (less watering) and absorbs excess moisture in winter.

✨ “Golden Blond” Look

Its light, bright colour sets off the green of the plants and gives your beds a “clean”, finished look.

The 3 key uses in the garden

🥬 In the Vegetable Garden (An Anti-Slug Ally?)

Spread in a layer 5 to 7 cm thick, it blocks light and prevents weeds from emerging (natural weed control). In addition, its dry, slightly sharp texture is reputed to be unpleasant for slugs, thereby protecting your young lettuce plants.

🌸 In Flower Beds and Hedges

It keeps the soil cool in summer. As it breaks down slowly (it lasts 1 to 2 years), it supplies organic matter (humus) that feeds soil life without causing marked nitrogen starvation.

🐔 As Bedding (Cows, Poultry House and Stable)

This is a little-known but very effective use. Miscanthus is far more absorbent than wheat straw and traps ammonia odours. Once soiled, it goes to the compost heap to become a rich fertiliser.
