Miscanthus, hemp, pine bark: which is the best mulch?

Standing in front of the mulch shelf, doubt is common. Should you choose traditional pine bark? Fashionable hemp? Or the miscanthus everyone is talking about?
The choice is not only a matter of looks. A poor mulch can acidify your soil, blow away at the first gust of wind or vanish within three months. At Agribiomix, we have compared the three market favourites to help you decide.
The Match-up: Miscanthus vs Pine vs Hemp
| Criterion | Pine Bark | Hemp (Shives) | Miscanthus 🏆 |

| Price per m² | € (Low) | €€€ (High) | €€ (Medium) |
1. Pine Bark: A false good idea?
It is the best-selling mulch in France, but it is often a mistake in the vegetable garden. Pine is naturally acidic and contains tannins that slow the growth of some plants.
- ✅ Ideal for: “Ericaceous” (acid-soil) plants (hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons) that like acidity.
- ❌ Avoid for: The vegetable garden, rose bushes and fruit trees. In the long run, it degrades the agronomic quality of your soil.
2. Hemp: The lightweight option
Hemp shive is an excellent thermal insulator. It is highly valued for its ability to retain water.
- ✅ Ideal for: Short crops (salads) and soils that need to warm up quickly.
- ❌ The drawback: It is very light. If your garden is exposed to wind, the hemp blows into the neighbour’s garden at the first storm. It also breaks down very quickly (to be renewed every year).
3. Miscanthus: The perfect compromise
It is the rising star. Miscanthus combines the advantages without the major drawbacks.
- ✅ Neutral: It respects soil life (earthworms) and suits 100% of plants.
- ✅ Stable: Once watered, the chips interlock. It withstands wind and can even mulch a slope.
- ✅ Bright: Its “golden blond” colour is unbeatable for appearance.
🏆 Verdict: Which one to choose?
If you have hydrangeas, stick with Pine. For everything else (hedges, vegetable garden, flower beds), Miscanthus is technically superior.
