Paulownia Shantong plants – Hybrid Timber & Biomass
The No. 1 choice for lumber recovery: straightness, speed and strength.
Paulownia Shantong is the benchmark hybrid variety for profitable agroforestry projects. A cross between P. Tomentosa (for resistance to cold) and P. Fortunei (for growth speed), this “super-tree” is capable of reaching operational maturity in just 8 to 10 years.
Why choose the Shantong variety?
Unlike conventional varieties, this hybrid has been selected to eliminate defects and combine agronomic qualities:
✅ S uperior lumber: Shantong develops a perfectly straight, “clean” trunk (fewer knots). Its light, fine-textured, highly resistant wood is prized for cabinetmaking, interior fittings and shipbuilding.
✅ Maximum hardiness: This is one of the most cold-hardy Paulownias, tolerating temperatures down to -20°C, as well as poorer or drier soils.
✅ Explosive growth: up to 4 meters per year in the first few years. It allows much faster rotation than poplar or oak.
Technical specifications
Species: Hybrid Paulownia Shantong (Tomentosa x Fortunei).
Packaging: Rooted plant in 9×9 cm bucket.
Height at maturity: 10 to 15 meters.
Harvestable diameter: 30 to 40 cm.
Disease resistance: High tolerance to parasites and fungal diseases.
⚠️ Important – Seasonal cycle: Paulownia is a deciduous tree. In winter (November-March), it is normal to receive a leafless “stick”. The plant has been pruned to concentrate its sap in the roots. It will restart vigorously as soon as the soil warms up in spring.
Why buy seedlings rather than seeds?
Shantong is a complex variety to propagate. Cutting and germination are long, tedious and technically difficult processes for this specific hybrid. By buying our plants in 9×9 cups, you gain 1 year of cultivation and secure your recovery with an already formed root system and a valid phytosanitary passport.
Agribiomix advantages
Varietal certification: No unpleasant genetic surprises, you’re planting real Shantong.
Careful shipment: Protective shells for shipment throughout metropolitan France.
